How much do you want to spend? Around £5, the big brand names dominate, they make decent, accessible wines at a reasonable price. Choose Australian/Chilean rather than Californian at these prices. On the minus side the wines tend to be a little dull, so if you’re not just looking for a liquid to wash down your dinner….explore!

Cheap wine doesn’t have to be dull, buy smart and there are some great bargains. Avoid cheaper wines from Bordeaux/Burgundy + other well known regions. Go instead for some of the new wine-producers in the S. of France or off the beaten track in Sicily, Portugal + lesser known regions in Spain.

If you want to spend more on a bottle of wine, say up to £25 for a special bottle, you will generally find a better choice in independent wine shops, supermarkets aren’t interested in small lots of wines from individual producers.

Critics can give some tips on good value wines but they generally feature wines from the large supermarket chains, it keeps them in a job! So explore for yourself, contact your independent retailer and he/she will be happy to advise on any ‘little gems’ that might be on the market.
